How Does Popcorn Pop?

Have you ever wondered why popcorn pops? Well today I will be telling you! There is only one special type of corn that can pop and that popcorn is called Zea mays everta. Popcorn originated in America and has been around for a long time dating back to 3600 bc.

There are three parts of the popcorn seed and that is the hull, endosperm and germ and they all work together to make the popcorn that you eat today! The endosperm is in fact trapped water.

When popcorn is heated it creates steam. The steam builds up inside the hull and needs to escape. The steam keeps coming and once the steam hills up the entire hull it pops!

Next time you eat that tasty treat you will remember how pop is made.
